Abstract

This study explores the teaching methods used in Islamic History (Tarikh Islam) to enhance students’ foreign language proficiency at Pondok Modern Ibadurrahman Tenggarong Seberang. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research collected data through observations, interviews, and documentation involving teachers and students within the Kulliyatul Mu’allimin Al-Islamiyah (KMI) system. The findings reveal that the teaching of Islamic History integrates both general pedagogical methods and Arabic language teaching approaches. The primary methods identified include the lecture method, question-and-answer method, and demonstration method, alongside Arabic language approaches such as Thariqah al-Qawaid wa Tarjamah (grammar-translation method), Thariqah al-Mubasyarah (direct method), and Thariqah al-Ilha’iyyah (inspirational storytelling method). These methods are applied complementarily to facilitate students’ comprehension of historical content while simultaneously developing their Arabic language skills. The use of Arabic as the main medium of instruction further supports the creation of a language-rich environment. The study concludes that the integration of varied and adaptive teaching methods contributes significantly to both students’ understanding of Islamic history and their foreign language development. This research offers insights into the pedagogical practices of modern Islamic boarding schools in integrating subject content with language learning
